A comparison of military power between India and Pakistan reveals a complex balance of manpower, weapons, budget, nuclear capabilities and strategic principles. The two countries have been rivals since partition in 1947. They have a history of engaging in multiple wars during this time. Given the geopolitical context, both countries have maintained significant military power for a long time.
Tensions have risen between the two neighbours after gunmen killed 26 people in a popular tourist destination in Pahalgam in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. India has taken several steps against the country, accusing it of being sponsored by Pakistan. Pakistan has also announced countermeasures.
In such a context, many fear that India and Pakistan may engage in a military conflict. Relevantly, the issue of the military capabilities of both countries is coming up for discussion. Malaysia-based ‘Defense Security Asia’ has published an analytical report on the important aspects of this capability.
The report, prepared according to the ‘Global Firepower Index (GFP) 2025’, was published on the Defense Security Asia website yesterday, Friday. The significant parts of the report are highlighted for the reader:
Overall Military Ranking and Capability Index
The ‘GFP 2025’ has assessed 145 countries on the basis of more than 60 factors (manpower, military equipment, economic and geographical conditions, etc.). Accordingly, in the overall ranking, India is fourth in the world, with a capability index score of 0.1184 (a lower score means a stronger army). In this case, Pakistan is 12th in the world, with a score of 0.2513.
India’s position in the ranking reflects the country’s large population, large defense budget and wide range of military assets. On the other hand, Pakistan, despite various constraints due to its small economy and dependence on foreign suppliers, especially China, is focused on strategic issues to counter India. As a result, the country is in a competitive position in certain sectors.
